Emma Curtright, MVHS 11th Grader

Emma Curtright is a top-notch cadet and a true leader! Her academic rigor far exceeds that of her peers; her schedule is filled with all available honors classes and, impressively, she holds the number 2 spot among the 150 Juniors. Emma’s dedication to enhanced learning was evident during a Civil Air Patrol flight orientation where she took control of the aircraft and piloted it from the Kayenta Airport to Cal Black Memorial Airport in Utah, thus earning an experienced pilot’s compliment of her piloting/flying skills. As a result, Emma was selected as our strongest candidate to the Air Force Flight Academy – our first nomination and now our first selectee! Emma will be the first Native American from a Reservation school to receive this scholarship; she will travel this summer to an 8-week program and earn her pilot’s license. Not only is Emma succeeding in school, but she is also a multi-focused student who’s willing to tackle challenges outside our JROTC classroom. She stepped up to become the Junior Class Treasurer, the National Honor Society Treasurer, an officer with the Mr. & Miss MVHS and the Foreign Exchange Club, and a varsity runner for the cross-country team. Within her busy schedule, she is creating one-of-a-kind blankets for Veterans to show her appreciation for their service and sacrifice to our Country. Her thoughtfulness extended into her community service projects as she completed over 10 hours in one month. Our biggest event occurred during the Western Navajo Fair at Tuba City, where Emma championed her duties working 8 hours directing traffic to ensure the safety and security of 20,000 attendees throughout the day and into the night. As a result, the fair organizers graciously donated $4,000 to the JROTC club account to fund field trips and STEM-related items. Overall, “Service before Self” perfectly describes Emma as her professionalism, dedication, politeness, and kindness are the traits in servant leadership that makes her an ideal recruiter for JROTC and a perfect role model for all, thereby making her a deserving of this recognition.
Sophia Vise, MVHS Art Teacher
Sophia Vise is the Art Teacher at Monument Valley High School. She has a wealth of experience that she has brought to Kayenta that includes teaching art in Egypt and Ukraine. While at MVHS, Sophia has taken the role of Freshman Class Sponsor without hesitation and has helped the freshman through fund raising ventures. Her expertise is in print making and she has developed curriculum for sculpting and clay making. Students have experienced a high level of student-centered engagement in her class and have contributed to art projects throughout the building. Her high energy coupled with the student-centered environment has resulted in a renowned love for the arts within the student body of MVHS.

Daily, Cheryl and Rowena work in tandem to ensure that day-to-day operations at MVHS are running smoothly. Cheryl is integral in ensuring our teachers are covered if they request for approved leave. She works closely with MVHS Administration on student discipline reports as well as daily bulletins for students and staff. If teachers have events or activities happening, she prepares that communication and send out via email to all students and staff. Rowena is also integral in ensuring the community is in the know about what is taking place at Monument Valley High School. She oversees the details within the MVHS website as well as effectively communicates with staff during fire drills and lockdown drills. Her ability to compile data and create reports has helped with the MVHS Letter Grade Appeal process. Both Cheryl and Rowena have a wealth of experience that is being celebrated by naming them Co-Staff of the Month for November.

The Air Force Junior ROTC is proud to announce the selection of Emma Curtright to the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) Flight Academy Program. She is one of the 200 students selected across all high school Air Force JROTC programs and stood out amongst the 1,300 total applicants this school year. In the beginning of the school year, instructors at Monument Valley High School announced to the class that the flight academy applications were open and Emma Curtright stepped up and volunteered. As such, Colonel Evernham, an instructor at MVHS and a former pilot in the United States Air Force, began mentoring Emma on the requirements since this initiative is highly competitive and very demanding. The work invested such as physical exercises in addition to taking the ACT and the Aviation Qualification Test prior to the deadline has certainly paid off as Emma will be attending an 8-week summer aviation training program at any of the top aviation universities across the country. This scholarship will pay for round-trip airfare, room and board, collegiate academics, and flight hours to earn her Private Pilot’s Certificate.
So when you see Emma, please congratulate her on becoming the “best of the best” in leadership, her grades, class standing, service, and commitment. She is the first Monument Valley High School student to be selected to this prestigious program and she will become the first high school student to earn her pilot license on the Navajo Nation. Thank you to Emma and her parents and to all teachers, counselors, and staff for your recommendations, mentorship, and encouragement to advance our students’ endeavors.

Hard work truly paid off, congratulations on achieving new heights! Our very own Monument Valley High School Junior, Kylie Dodson becomes the first female to win Indian National Finals Rodeo Junior Breakaway. Dodson broke down barriers when she won the event in the INFR debut.

I would like to extend a congratulations to Azalia Harvey-Leo (11th grade) and Alijah Belin (11th grade) for being nominated for September Co-Student of the Month.
Both students have done an outstanding job thus far in the semester and have established great habits as student leaders within MVHS.
Next, we would like to recognize Mr. Jon Sombrero and Mrs. Sharon Atene as our Staff of the Month for September.
Mrs. Atene has done an exceptional job at providing great leadership skills within her respective department. She ensures that our building is clean and ready to go each day. In addition to the cleanliness of our building, she coordinates with her staff to ensure that our building is ready for any event we host. She does all of this with a smile on her face and a warm welcome each day.
Mr. Sombrero has provided our AFJROTC students with extended opportunities outside of school to showcase their hard work in and around the Kayenta Community. The color guard has also been invited to a variety of community activities and Mr. Sombrero has played an integral part in supporting our students off campus. Recently, he accompanied our students to the Western Agency fair where they helped coordinate traffic during the festivities on Saturday. In addition, Mr. Sombrero has provided a myriad of resources to our senior parents as the senior class sponsor.

The deadline is fast approaching. Do NOT wait until the last minute to try to complete your ECAP.
If you are planning to try-out for wrestling or basketball, now is the time to start taking care of your paperwork. Do not wait until the last minute. If you did not participate in Fall sports, the following forms and fee is needed.
1. MVHS/KMS Student-athlete Handbook Forms A, B, C, & D required
2. AIA Physical Examination Form required.
3. $10.00 participation fee required (Cash Only)
4. First day of Winter Sports practice is October 31.
For those of you who are participating in Fall Sports the following is needed in order to join Winter Sports:
1. Clearance Slip form from current head coach. This verifies you have turned in all equipment.
2. Participation fee of $10.00
3. The first day of practice for winter sports is October 31.
